Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP): Complete Legal Guide

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is Alberta's Provincial Nominee Program, allowing the province to nominate individuals for permanent residence who meet Alberta's labour market and economic needs.

AAIP Streams

Alberta Opportunity Stream

For temporary foreign workers already employed in Alberta with a valid work permit. Requirements include:

  • Current qualifying occupation in Alberta
  • Valid work permit or authorization
  • Minimum language benchmark (CLB 4-5 depending on NOC TEER)
  • Minimum education requirements
  • Alberta Express Entry Stream

Linked to the federal Express Entry system. Alberta sends Notifications of Interest (NOI) to Express Entry candidates who:

  • Have a strong connection to Alberta (current residence, job offer, or Alberta education)
  • Work in occupations aligned with Alberta's economic priorities
  • Meet minimum CRS score thresholds set by Alberta
  • Rural Renewal Stream

Targets skilled workers willing to settle in participating rural Alberta communities. Requires endorsement from a designated rural community.

    Graduate Entrepreneur Stream

For international graduates from Alberta post-secondary institutions who want to start or acquire a business in Alberta.

    Legal Considerations

Provincial nomination is a two-step process: first, you must be nominated by the province, then you must apply for permanent residence to IRCC. A nomination adds 600 CRS points to your Express Entry profile.

Important: Provincial nominees must genuinely intend to reside in the nominating province. Misrepresentation about intent to reside can result in refusal or revocation of PR status under IRPA s.40.
